Jonas Brothers prove they don’t belong on long, forgettable list of teen pop flashes

In the grand pantheon of teen pop sensations, a long and largely forgettable list of 15-minute flashes, the Jonas Brothers always seemed to follow their own road map. Sure, they rode the same wave that turns pubescent girls’ hearts to mush. But there’s always been more at work here. There is genuine potential, talent even, that deserves rediscovering particularly now that Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas are on the other side of the heyday.

The trio’s last studio album, 2009′s Lines, Vines and Trying Times, sold markedly less than its predecessors 2007′s Jonas Brothers and 2008′s A Little Bit Longer. Solo offerings from Nick (2010′sWho I Am) and Joe (2011′s Fastlife) didn’t fare any better. The brothers’ three-year hiatus from the stateside concert stage cost them fans. This is a group that once filled Cowboys Stadium. Tuesday night’s show at Gexa Energy Pavilion drew 4,900 admirers.
That’s a shame because the tunes I’ve heard so far from the JoBros’ upcoming studio disc, V, represent some of their best work. “First Time,” which opened the concert, has a swirling, nocturnal, adult vibe. “Pom Poms” is all catchy chorus and stomping beat, while “Found” is a slinky, mid-tempo pop number. “The World” has a techno-trippy synthesized loop that accentuates a groovy hook. “Let’s Go” is all propulsive teen pop with rapping attitude. “What Do I Mean to You” unleashes a rock edge that I’ve never witnessed on a Jonas Brothers cut.

All of these songs were produced by Nick, who is clearly the group’s overachieving musical dynamo. But the three Jonas siblings have been writing their own material since the 2006 debut It’s About Time. On the two follow-up albums they dispensed with most of the outside co-writers and crafted the tunes themselves. It’s still pretty powerful to hear Nick Jonas sing “A Little Bit Longer,” a song about his struggles with Type 1 Diabetes, while sitting at the piano. Teflon teen pop sensations don’t compose songs about the lifelong disease that caught them at the tender age of 13.

Even the Jonas Brothers’ band on that Gexa stage Tuesday night was hefty. Seven members, including a saxophonist, background vocalist and keyboardist, kept the sound full and authentic. This wasn’t mere computerized gadgetry thinly supported by guitar, bass and drums. Nick, who was born in Dallas, took to the six strings, the drums and the piano. Joe Jonas, the pin-up of the family, acknowledged that “it’s nice to be back to the place we call home,” referencing the brothers’ house in Westlake.

For the hysterical female fans standing around me, this homecoming couldn’t have arrived any sooner. The ballad “When You Look Me In the Eyes,” the teen pop anthem “Burnin’ Up,” and the bouncy ditty “That’s Just the Way We Roll” elicited all matter of screaming, singing, crying and jumping. When Joe Jonas made his grand entrance by walking down the aisle next to our section I truly thought one teen girl in particular was going to need oxygen.

But when all of that goes away, and it will soon enough, I hope somebody, anybody, notices that Nick, 20, Joe, 23, and Kevin, 25, have musical substance to share. It would be disappointing to see them become yet another teen pop footnote.

Selena Gomez: ‘The Most Attractive Thing’ About A Woman Is Confidence'

$

watch here if it doesn't work
Selena Gomez has shown her sultry side in recent weeks with her latest singles, “Come & Get It” and “Slow Down.”

But is the former Disney star – who turned 21 in July – happy with her sexier image?

“I think the most attractive thing about a woman, for me, is confidence,” Selena told Access Hollywood during a visit to her “Stars Dance” tour rehearsal. “So, because I turned 21 this year and a lot of great things have happened for me, that’s the one thing I want to exude.”

The singer/actress said her newfound confidence has definitely influenced her style and prompted her to vamp up her look.

“I’ve become a bit more about the red lip and being a little bit more – I like to say confident, as opposed to sexy, even though that’s what I feel,” she said. “And I feel very comfortable in my skin.”

Selena said she doesn’t feel like she’s completed the transition from child star to adult, but is getting closer.

“I still feel like I’m 15 sometimes when I’m running around and getting to live my dream all the time, but I definitely feel like I’ve become my own [person],” she told Access.

As for her whether she’s heard from her recently revealed crushes Jesse McCartney and Logan Lerman, Selena said it’s been quiet on the crush front.

“Gosh, no! I think they’re staying far from me,” she said with a laugh. “It’s fine.”

Diane Keaton, Ty Burrell, and Eugene Levy join "Finding Dory" + other Disney Pixar movie news

Disney announced on Friday at the D23 expo in Anaheim, Calif., that Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy will join Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks in the Disney/Pixar Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory.

Ty Burrell has also been added to the cast, playing a whale named Bailey.

Finding Dory is slated to hit theaters in November 2015.

Disney also announced on Friday the voice casts of its upcoming Good Dinosaur and Inside Out.

The cast of the prehistoric creatures feature includes John Lithgow as the character of Poppa and Frances McDormand as Momma, along with Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris and Judy Greer, playing their kids, and Lucas Neff, voicing the protagonist Arlo.

Up director Pete Docter's follow up, Inside Out, which is a film told from the perspective of the emotions inside the mind of a little girl, includes Anger, voiced by Lewis Black; Disgust, Mindy Kaling; Fear, Bill Hader; Joy, Amy Poehler; and Sadness, Phyllis Smith.

Additionally, Disney announced two new projects on Friday, including Legend of the NeverBeast, arriving Spring 2015, and The Pirate Fairy, due in Spring 2014. Christina Hendricks and Tom Hiddleston -- the Pirate Fairy voice cast -- took the stage to discuss their characters. The Mad Men actress will play Zarina, the titular character, while the Avengers alum will play James, a young Captain Hook.

In case anyone was curious I found this old article where John Lasseter details the plots of the new movies some more, I thought it was interesting/it wasn't posted I don't think:

The Good Dinosaur:
"What if the meteor that killed off the dinosaurs missed Earth and dinosaurs kept living? It’s really a great story because they are very funny dinosaurs. They are kind of cartoony but they are dinosaurs, they are not walking around with clothes on or anything like that, they still are kind of dinosaurs. We focused on mostly the plant-eaters, not the carnivores… Their society becomes more of an agrarian society, meaning farmers. They become farmers.

It’s a very funny story about a certain way of life that a young dinosaur has trouble fitting into and he ends up going on this quest. He kind of messes up and he has to put everything right by going on this quest and on that quest he meets this our character that is an outcast from his society too and so the two of them form this bond and it becomes this unique kind of story… kind of hard to describe. It’s a very special, very emotional story but it’s so quirky and nutty. That’s really the hallmark of Bob Peterson’s and Peter Sohn’s talent. Bob Peterson is truly one of the funniest people I’ve met and it’s coming through with this story. Pixar does dinosaurs, but like anything we touch… it’s unlike any other dinosaur picture you’ve seen ‘cause it doesn’t fit in your typical [idea of] what you think dinosaurs are. It’s absolutely beautiful too."

Inside Out
"And then Pete Docter… is working on the next one. We don’t have the title for it yet, but it takes place in the mind. Pete has this way of constantly trying to figure out something that we’re all familiar with in some way… he’s constantly looking for these kinds of things. You look at people oftentimes and they do something to make you go “What are they thinking?” or it’s like how a song gets stuck in your head and you just can’t get it out. Little quirky thing alike this that we all do. Certain emotions just seem to take us over, anger or happiness, where you start giggling and laughing and you can’t stop. He thought “I want to take a look at that, explain that.” His idea is that the emotions of this little girl are the characters and it takes place in the head of this little girl, and shows how they control things that go on. It’s very, very clever and it’s truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen, yet it explains things you’ve seen."
