Miley: "I have my dream person on my record but I can't tell you"

'We Can't Stop' rises to no. 2 on the Hot 100; equals 'Party in the USA'

...Meanwhile, a new runner-up moves up below it: Miley Cyrus'"We Can't Stop," which rises 3-2 with a 15% points gain. "Stop" nabs a fifth week atop Streaming Songs (10.1 million, up 37%, good for top Streaming Gainer honors on the Hot 100); a fourth week at its No. 2 peak on Digital Songs (208,000, down 3%); and lifts 37-34 on Radio Songs (37 million, up 14%).

With the climb (to reference another of her hits …) of "Stop," Cyrus equals her best Hot 100 rank. Her "Party in the U.S.A." spent three weeks peaking at No. 2 in 2009.

This song is slaying in sales (fourth week in a row selling over 200k) with minimal radio support and only two live performances a month ago and a music video released five weeks ago to promote it. Hopefully RCA has more promo planned for when sales start to drop off? Otherwise idk wtf they're doing, tbf.

The Diverging Musical Paths of Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Teen stardom is about being special: one kid’s talent and dreams standing in for millions. But the adult world affords fewer favors. How former child stars transition into adulthood has evolved over the decades, but there’s still no one true path to success.

Invariably, though, there’s a rupture, the moment in which the skin of youth is definitively molted. Of late, Miley Cyrus, 20, and Selena Gomez, who turned 21 on Monday, have each been pushing back in different ways — Ms. Gomez with her role in the film “Spring Breakers,” and Ms. Cyrus with her sometimes erratic, sometimes free-spirited tabloid life.

And yes, they are both still making music, though they’re using it for different things. For Ms. Gomez, who just released her debut solo album, “Stars Dance” (Hollywood), it’s a starchy place holder, a steppingstone from the naïve yesterday to the uncertain tomorrow. For Ms. Cyrus, whose single “We Can’t Stop” (RCA) is the No. 3 song in the country, it’s a rocket ship designed for maximum speed, the vehicle that can help her put her old life far in the rear.

“We Can’t Stop” is a low-key burner produced by Mike Will Made It, whose work expertly straddles urgent, dark R&B; hip-hop gravity; and pop accessibility. It’s a rejection of all of teen-pop’s brightness, except in the chipperness of the chorus, which basically amounts to Ms. Cyrus’s gloating about misbehaving.

“We Can’t Stop” is about youth, and the sense that it is best spent fast and irresponsibly. In the video, Ms. Cyrus pops a gold grill into her mouth, dresses like someone who shops at VFiles, makes out with a doll and, as has been her recent wont, gets to twerking, the derrière-centric stripper-derived dancing du jour.

It’s a statement of young-woman independence from someone choked in her own youth not only by Disney fame, but also by being the child of a celebrity. Plenty of former child stars rebel, but Ms. Cyrus is taking the express lane. “Everyone in line in the bathroom/trying to get a line in the bathroom,” she sings at one point, in an alluring, husky croak. Elsewhere she spits out a line that, depending how you hear it, says “dancing with Miley” or “dancing with molly” (as in Ecstasy).

Over the last year, Ms. Cyrus has become something of a TMZ fixture, not for Britney Spears-style meltdowns, but for feeling out new forms of rebellion, including the touristic appropriation of black culture she shows off in the song’s video. (That’s doubly hilarious given that after she referred to Jay Z in her 2009 breakout pop single “Party in the U.S.A.,” she insisted she’d never even heard a Jay Z song.) But give Ms. Cyrus credit for keeping her creative life and her public life consistent; the closer the two get, the better an artist she’s becoming.

Ms. Gomez is walking a lower wire on her album, though it’s unclear why. She’s already dispensed with her supposed teenage naïveté with her star turn in “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s teen apocalypse film (even if she was the most timid of all its stars).

But music still matters for Ms. Gomez, as it does for most of her Disney peers. It has a low barrier to entry and it has the greatest potential for viral spread. One good TV or film role might earn some credibility, but stumble upon a hit song, and you can live on forever.

Of all her Disney-generation peers, though, she’s been the least convincing musician. In their younger years, Ms. Cyrus was more talented than Ms. Gomez, though less intriguing. Their fellow ex-Disney star Demi Lovato, 20, has carved out similar routes with far more success; Ms. Lovato is twice the rebel Ms. Gomez is, and four times the singer.

Before “Stars Dance,” Ms. Gomez released a string of pleasant enough but undistinguished releases as part of Selena Gomez & the Scene. He solo album is safe, too, in its eclecticism, which is closest to the spirit of Gwen Stefani — breathy, wide-ranging, largely toothless.

This album bears scars of faceless modern club music, as on “Forget Forever” and “Write Your Name,” which includes a whisper-rap right out of Madonna’s “Vogue.” “B.E.A.T.” is dirtier and more promising, aiming for Kesha’s moistness but landing somewhere closer to no-hit-wonder Dev’s “Bass Down Low.” The producers of “Slow Down,” with its punk-funk backdrop, appear to have listened to a Gang of Four album, or at least one by the Rapture. There are also flickers of rocksteady on “Come & Get It,” and the brattiness of Icona Pop on the excellent “Birthday.”

Ms. Gomez has grown up, too, though she’s not as eager to show it off as Ms. Cyrus. On the banal “Undercover,” she sings, “Find me in the shadows, and pull the shades down until tomorrow.” (A similar awakening is had, to a much less tawdry degree, by the Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande on her recent single “The Way.”)

And “Love Will Remember” appears to close the chapter on Ms. Gomez’s relationship with Justin Bieber: “We lit the whole world up before we blew up/I still don’t know just how we screwed it up.”

A leaked version of the song included what appeared to be a love-proclaiming voice mail from Mr. Bieber. That version doesn’t appear on the finished album, but that it made its way out into the world didn’t feel accidental. Ms. Gomez’s real adulthood gambit might not be musical, or creative, but psychological.

Bella Thorne’s latest role certainly is a departure from her frothy Disney Channel sitcom.

The Shake It Up star has scored a lead role in Home Invasion, rookie feature director Sean Carter’s thriller about a family imprisoned by intruders who play a life-and-death game in which the mysterious rules become clear as the night unfolds.

Thorne will play Jamie, a disillusioned teenager intensely guarding a personal secret.

Voltage Pictures is financing the project, written by first-time scribe and co-producer Joseph Dembner, and producing with Silver Pictures’ low-budget label Zinc Entertainment. Silver Pictures’ Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce with Voltage’s Nicolas Chartier and Craig Flores. Joel Silver, Steve Richards and Michael Fiore will exec produce. Voltage’s Dominic Rustan handled the deal for the company.

Thorne’s Shake It Up is in its third season on Dis Channel. She recently wrapped a role in the Adam Sandler-Drew Barrymore comedy Blended and is nominated for an Imagen Award as Best Young Actress, Television. The 15-year-old also is signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records and has a three-book deal with Random House. She is repped by WME and KLWGN Entertainment.

Zac Efron in talks for 'Star Wars'?

Disney conspicuously kept Star Wars out of this year’s Comic-Con slate only to have it at it’s own annual D23 Expo, which is about three weeks away, August 9-11 in Anaheim.

The studio is working to produce a Star Wars: Episode VII and continue the story of where 1983′s Episode VI: Return of the Jedi left off. Production on the seventh film in the series will start next year in the UK.

Star Wars cast announcements are speculated to be on the horizon at this year’s D23.

About a two months ago my source informed me that they were going to start filming in Pinewood, but I really never paid any mind to it and now it ends up being true that they will indeed film there. I was also told that a MAJOR film star went in for a meeting, that star was Leo DiCaprio. And now I’m told that he’s out.

A little while ago I was told that two names have been thrown around a lot, and that another star went in last week.

The two stars are none other than…

RYAN GOSLING and ZAC EFRON

As for what role Efron would be playing, we don’t know. He could be a Solo kid. But what I was told for sure is the Gosling went in for Skywalker’s son. Yes, that’s right Luke’s kid.

Interesting thing is that Episode 7 is taking place thirty years after Return of the Jedi.

Things are going to start heating up in the next month. And no way is J.J. Abrams leaving Episode 7 for Star Trek 3. Its very possible though he does just one movie in the new trilogy.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi represented the end of the Star Wars series on film but the story for Episode VII will be original and written by Michael Arndt, whose writing credits include Toy Story 3 and the upcoming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Selena Gomez says Taylor Swift & Britney Spears inspired 'Stars Dance'

"She told CNN: "The past year and a half has been really transitional for me, just personally, as well as transitioning into becoming a woman. I still feel like I'm 15 sometimes and then other times, I'm wanting to feel comfortable in my body and my skin.

"I was able to have full creative control over it. Before, I would have maybe a month or two to record an album, and I'd have to do my series at the same time and tour on the weekends. I wasn't in the right mindset to fully give my all."

She added that she had been listening to Taylor Swift and Britney Spears's new music, which inspired the mature sound of her album.

Gomez, who started acting in the show Barney and Friends, also said that the reason she hadn't gone off the rails like other child stars was due to the company she keeps.

She said: "I truly believe that you are who you surround yourself with. To me, it's that easy. I have a great family, I have great friends, and my mom is like my mama bear. She's the one that's going to tell me 'no' when everyone around me says 'yes'.

"It's a good thing to have a tight group that will keep you in check.""

"The 18-year-old The Fosters actor will be recognized at Variety’s 2013 Power of Youth for his work with Ronald McDonald House, to which he’s also the official youth ambassador.

"The fact that my mom’s an oncology nurse means I’ve been very close to the world of cancer, and it’s not something to tiptoe away from," he shared. "So I’m using my position as a platform to bring a message to kids: to get involved, whether it be donating or educating themselves about the cause."

"[I got involved] because it spoke to my personality and my roots. We had a close family friend who just passed away from cancer, and I was in awe watching the courage and strength some of these patients have…I make it a point to visit the House and reconnect with a lot of kids whenever I can," Jake added."

"Stars Dance," Selena Gomez's fourth studio album and first as a solo artist, has a great shot at debuting in the top spot on next week's Billboard 200 chart after being released on Tuesday (July 23). The achievement would mark the pop singer's first No. 1 album, and while catching up with Billboard at her Dream Out Loud fall collection launch in New York on Wednesday (July 24), Gomez expressed excitement over the possibility of "Stars" dancing to the chart summit.

"It makes me feel really humble," says Gomez, "because this is my fourth record. I've worked really hard on my music; to have a first No. 1 is really humbling… Hopefully there will be a No. 1. That would be amazing! I don't even know what I'd do."

Billboard: Demi Lovato Hits Social 50 Chart High

$
0
0

Demi Lovato makes a 15-position leap to No. 2 on the Social 50 chart, prompted by the release of the official Vevo video on July 17 for her single "Made in the USA." The title garnered 8.8 million worldwide views during the charting week, helping to contribute to the over 17 million plays her Vevo channel received (a 92% increase).

The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart's methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.

Lovato’s ascension is also aided by the addition of 656,000 fans across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, a 46% increase over the previous week. She additionally received 241,000 visitors (up 21%) to her Wikipedia page.

“Made in the USA” is the second single from her fourth album, "Demi," which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 dated June 1 -- the same week she posted her previous best Social 50 peak at No. 4. The first video released from that set, “Heart Attack,” was the catalyst for Demi’s first top 10 residency on the Social 50, when she rose 17-8 on the April 27 chart after receiving 8 million overall plays across Vevo and YouTube.

Right behind Lovato is Eminem, who soars 12-3, following confirmation of rumors that new music is on the way. During the week, conversation (and fan acquisition) spiked as hip-hop DJ Whoo Kid posted a stylized picture of Eminem with the caption “My boss at #SiriusXM @shade45 new music coming soon.”

The news caused fan acquisition to spike, ushering a 58% increase in weekly Facebook fan acquisition and a 15% bump in weekly Twitter follower acquisition, leading to the addition of 664,000 new fans overall.

Meanwhile, singer/actress Bridgit Mendler re-enters at No. 41 following heavy social media activity around her summer tour, which kicked off about a month ago. Throughout dates in California and Texas, she’s kept her audience engaged on Instagram, where she’s received a boost in fan acquisition. This past week, she gained 107,000 new fans on the platform, contributing to a 37% rise in that metric.

Back to the top 10, Justin Bieber remains at No. 1 despite Demi Lovato’s significant jump. Rihanna is displaced (3-4) by Lovato and Eminem’s movements, and Miley Cyrus falls 2-5. One Direction rises 10-6, a climb that could continue into next week, as buzz generated by their new single “Best Song Ever” will factor into next week’s Social tally. Jennifer Lopez slides 6-7, as does Taylor Swift (4-8), Justin Timberlake (7-9) and Britney Spears (8-10).
