Miley Cyrus''We Can't Stop' Video: Scene By Scene
"It's like a giant, fucked-up selfie," says Martel, who wrote the video treatment with her friend Aramis Israel. "We wanted the video to be full of blog-worthy moments, but it ended up being about Miley sharing herself with her audience in a crazed way. It's exhibitionistic, and she's absolutely taking the piss out of being in a pop video." Here, Martel explains 10 of the wildest images from the video:
The Product Placement (0:02)
The video opens with a shot of Cyrus slicing off an ankle bracelet with a giant pair of pink scissors, followed by a similarly colored Beats By Dre branded Pill speaker. "Beats By Dre contributed to our budget in exchange for a product shot," Martel explains. "I think the pill looked nice and matched the scissors Miley cut her house-arrest bracelet off with."
The Gold Teeth (0:08)
As the music gains steam, Cyrus attaches a grill to her front teeth and gnashes for the camera. "Miley owns a few beautiful pairs of fronts," says Martel. "She wanted to wear some, so I thought the video should start with her like Iron Man, gearing up."
The Smoke Dicks (0:17, 0:36, 2:01)
In three separate instances, overjoyed characters party in a dark room with what looks like smoke bombs going off in their pants. Martel and her team called this effect "smoke dick."
The Mountain of White Bread (0:27, 2:26 3:11)
One character in "We Can't Stop" chews on a white bread sandwich with cash as its filling, while another rolls around in a massive mound of bread and eats a slice in ecstasy. "I got obsessed with having a pile of bread in the kitchen, like a fucked-up version of party food/chips," says Martel. "Sometimes, I just want to put something in a video, and this time, it was bread."
The French-Fry Skull (0:34, 0:38)
The single most arresting visual in the clip is a human skull built out of French fries, which is quickly crushed by a falling sneaker. The image was suggested by Cyrus, who found a photo of a very similar sculpture by artist Christopher Chiappa and showed it to Martel. "We didn't know until after the video was shot," Martel says of the original work's creator. "He was nice and he let us use our version of his art."
The Severed Fingers (0:59)
A woman uses a chef's knife to slice off all the fingers on her left hand, which promptly begins oozing bubblegum-pink goo. Notes Martel, "Scouting in the kitchen, I thought, 'Oh, someone has to cut off their fingers.'"
The Teddy Bears (starting at 1:06; 1:37)
Art director Georgia Walker found the teddy-bear backpacks work by Cyrus and her backup dancers in a prop shop. The same goes for the two "sad little taxidermy dudes" in sunglasses and a gold necklace that Cyrus carries around. "Miley likes taxidermy," Martel adds, "and there is awesome taxidermy at prop shops."
The Giant Doll (1:44, 1:49)
Cyrus and a huge Barbie-like doll pose in a swimming pool, and then Cyrus tongues the toy. Martel calls the doll "another nasty prop-shop find." After she saw that Cyrus was fond of it, the director insisted that the doll be dressed in a swimsuit that matches Cyrus'. "We gave Miley the doll in the pool and she did some improvisational doll performance."
The Hot-Dog-Filled Piñata (2:37)
Food appears again as Cyrus takes a bat to a big, yellow piñata, spilling hot dogs all over the floor. The singer and her friends happily retrieve the eats. "Miley had a birthday party for her brother, and they had weird shit in a piñata," says Martel. "She requested that we have hot dogs and blunts in one in the video. No one has noticed the giant blunts on the rug."
What Didn't Make The Cut
For all the crazy visuals in the final clip, there are a few more things Martel wishes she'd been able to include. "The image I wish we had time to shoot is one I've wanted to shoot for a while: ghost wigs [and] floating giant hairstyles wearing sunglasses," Martel says. "The scene was going to be this kid sitting in a room looking spaced-out as two ghost wigs floated by above her head, [with a] nine-foot Grim Reaper with really lo-fi, trippy lights gently caressing it and Miley riding a painted horse." There's still a chance for these absurd concepts: Martel says that she and Cyrus are planning to make another short film/music video that nods to cult directors John Waters and Paul Morrissey.

Selena leaving the Beyoncé show last night + more
"Treating herself to an evening of girl power, Selena Gomez attended the Mrs. Carter World Tour concert by Beyoncé Knowles in Los Angeles last night (July 1).
The “Wizards of Waverly Place” dame brought a few of her gal pals to the Staples Center for the gig, and looked gorgeous in cut-off denim shorts with a sheer black top.
Selena was no doubt celebrating the announcement earlier in the day that her new single “Come and Get It” had reached the coveted #1 spot on the charts.
Gomez tweeted a heartfelt thank-you to her fans, stating, “This has been 1 of my proudest achievements & I couldn’t do it without everyone! So grateful.”

Demi Lovato cancels her July 4th appearance
Due to a strep throat, pop singer Demi Lovato has decided to cancel her performance for the Wawa Welcome America Fourth of July Jam on the Parkway.
City officials confirmed to Philly.com Tuesday morning that country star Hunter Hayes has been added to the lineup as a replacement.
Lovato recently lost her biological father to cancer, who she was estranged from. She also opened up in the August issue of Cosmopolitan telling them she was suicidal at the age of seven.

Disney Channel's Flash Forward weekend
"Disney Channel — which as my sons will be the first to tell you has a penchant for unofficially “themed” weekends — is setting up seven of its shows for a “future” shock, with its first-ever Flash Forward Weekend event.
The slate of all-new, futuristic episodes kicks off Friday, July 26 with A.N.T. Farm, and wraps that Sunday. (Nestled in the middle of the time-jumping fare, on Saturday at 8/7c, is the Dance Along edition of Teen Beach Movie, which premieres Friday, July 19).

Meanwhile, Lexi hopes to travel back in time to correct a horrible event from the past — an ugly photo taken on her 5th grade school picture day.
8:30 pm Jessie | Future Jessie appears from an elevator time machine to warn Present Jessie to run for her life. Why? Because when Ravi grows up, he invents a robot version of Bertram (a “Bertram-Bot”) that evolves into an army that tries to destroy Jessie and take over the world.

Miley's "We Can't Stop" soars to #3 on the Hot 100; bests "The Climb"
"Miley Cyrus'"We Can't Stop" charges 5-3 as the Hot 100's top Digital Gainer. It rises 6-2 on Hot Digital Songs (209,000, up 30%) after a 74% gain (to 161,000) last week following the song's video premiere on June 19. "Stop" holds at No. 1 on Streaming Songs (8 million, down 16%; the clip's arrival spurred a 471% streaming increase a week ago). Radio could determine the song's staying power, and its No. 62 bow on Hot 100 Airplay (20 million, up 60%) is a positive sign for its fortunes.It pushes 27-24 in its fourth week on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart with the format's fourth-best gain in plays (up 50%).
With its 5-3 advance, "Stop" becomes Cyrus' second-highest-charting Hot 100 hit, bested only by "Party in the U.S.A.," which spent three weeks at No. 2 in 2009. "Stop" passes her No. 4-peaking "The Climb" (also in 2009)."

Miley vacations in the Bahamas
How's this for a star sighting?
None other than Miley Cyrus has been spotted vacationing in the Bahamas. What's more, the gal was gracious enough to pose for a photo with one of her fans.
"MILEY CYRUS IS IN HOPE TOWN AND I MET HER," Brittainy Trevathan tweeted on June 30 along with a photo of herself and the 20-year-old pop star.
Meanwhile, another eyewitness noted on Twitter, "My dad ran into Miley Cyrus in the Bahamas........."
Of course, if anyone deserves a little R&R, it's Cyrus. After all, she's been quite busy lately.
Last week, the "We Can't Stop" singer attended Y100's Mack-a-Palooza at the Clevelander hotel in Miami Beach, where she was caught twerking in a short black jumpsuit and snapping several sexy selfies.
Not to mention getting dangerously close on Saturday to suffering a double nip slip at an iHeartRadio event.
And last Wednesday, she jetted from L.A., after swinging by Jimmy Kimmel Live the night before, to New York for an appearance on Good Morning America.
Sitting down with GMA's Amy Robach, Cyrus spilled on the status of her engagement to actor Liam Hemsworth.
Noting the big rock on her finger, Robach wondered whether wedding bells were in Cyrus' future, especially since she was spotted without her ring in March, sparking rumors of a split.
But Cyrus made it clear she and Hemsworth are still very much together.
And when asked about the media's obsession with her personal life given that she's grown up in the public eye, Cyrus didn't addess the matter head-on, but did praise those fans who've stuck by her.
"My whole thing is, haters are gonna hate, but haters are also going to click on your YouTube video just to watch it so I don't really care," she said. "You helped me break the record. Even if you were watching just to hate on me, and now I hold the record, so I win."
